Chioggia, at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon in Italy, is an island-town with two faces: a sleepy, well-worn historic centre, and the modern resort of Scottomarina with its sailboats and beach hotels. There's no denying that Chioggia is the second most important city on the Venetian Lagoon and the busiest fishing port in the region. Chioggia is a miniature version of Venice, with a few canals, chief among them the Canale Vena, and the characteristic narrow streets known as calli.

Commercial fishing boats are moored along the waterfront, shellfish farms dot the neighbouring waters of the lagoon, and the city's fish market is a popular tourist attraction. Just as important, the downtown business district and back streets have an almost 1950s feel. This is due to the seafood restaurants and cafés that haven't changed in decades, and an atmosphere that suggests what the quieter neighbourhoods of Venice might have felt like in the days before mass tourism.
