Nias Island lies 100 km west of North Sumatera in the Indian Ocean. The 120 km long island has a population of 800,000 and is distinctive for its customs, art and buildings. Nias is located in an archipelago of 131 islands in an earthquake prone region along the Sunda Trench subduction zone. The massive 2005 Nias-Simueulue earthquake greatly affected North Nias and its capital Gunungsitoli. More than 80% of modern public buildings were destroyed.
