Bawemataluwo (or Bawomataluo, meaning “Sun Hill”) village is situated about 10 km inland from Teluk Dalam, the port and capital of South Nias. Nias is an island that lies 100 km off the west coast of North Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. The island is distinctive by language (Nias) and culture of its 800,000 inhabitants. The Bawemataluwo settlement sits atop a 260 m hill. Driving inland from Teluk Dalam, the road rises slowly between houses, roadside shops and busy roadside activity.
