Chania is the second largest city of Crete and lies along the north coast of the island. This region as a whole is rich in history, and Chania's Old Town with its old aristocratic appearance, arched doorways, stone staircases, small and crumbling Venetian harbour, a mosque, and narrow streets, is considered the most beautiful and well-preserved urban district on Crete.

Places of interest include the Archaeological Museum housed in the church of St. Fragiskos, the Chania Public Baths, and the Fortezza, a large Venetian castle. Hire a car or take a tour and visit the surrounding areas to enjoy, for example, the coral pink sand and crystalline water of Elafonisi beach, the Samaria Gorge and the Frangokastello Fortress. The modern part of Chania is where most locals live and work. It is less traditional than the old town, but there are still areas of delightful beauty or of some historical interest.

You can enjoy sampling the local food, such as bread in the form of a floral arrangement, at the covered markets, take a horse carriage canter around the port, enjoy the 'artists quarter', or visit the delightful cafes. While some of the old buildings have been restored as hotels, restaurants, shops and bars, this makes Chania a lively and colourful place to visit!
