Isla de la Juventud, the ‘Island of Youth,’ is a comma-shaped hurricane-beaten island 50 km south of Cuba, directly below Havana. Visited by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World, its later history saw it a pirate haven, Spanish penal colony, American enclave, and Cuban penal colony. It is the location of Treasure Island and inspiration for Peter Pan. Since 1925 it has been fully under Cuban ownership.
