Antilla is a town of 12,500 located on the NE shore of Cuba, on a peninsula between the Gulf of Nipe and Banes Bay. It saw naval fighting during the Spanish-American War (1898, the Battle of Nipes), served military purposes in the early 1900s, and the town was founded in 1907 as a railway terminal and port town. This was a boom town at the turn of the 21st C, as a major shipping port for lumber and sugar. Today, unused train lines extend out to sea on a concrete wharf now crumbling. Read more
