The Welland Canal is a ship canal in Ontario, Canada, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. It enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. Opened in 1829, it is 43.5 km long and took 5 years to construct. The current canal was completed in 1932. The elevation change between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie is 99.5 m. The canal carries about 3,000 ships that move about 40,000,000 tons of cargo a year.
