Victoria Settlement, Port Essington, located on the remote Coburg Peninsula in the Northern Territory, will take you back to an era in time often overlooked in Australia's history, by means of its amazing historic site attractions that include remaining defence installations, a Governor's residence, houses and other buildings based upon Cornish architectural styles with distinctive round Cornish chimneys, a lime kiln in almost pristine condition, and a cemetery complete with impressive headstones.
Unequalled as an example of early attempts at colonisation in the Northern Territory which failed due to such problems as no fresh water supply, wells that had to be dug by hand through unyielding ironstone, and lack of supplies brought from the south due to being thwarted by cyclones, it never became another Singapore, the main defence base and trading port in Australia´s north.
It is, though, an example of colonial tenacity as one really feels the isolation experienced by the garrison and their families. Feel and touch history as you join local guides to explore the remains of Victoria Settlement. For avid fishermen this is the place to try your hand at catching the famed fighting fish of the north!
