Nearby is its twin town Dongara at the mouth of the Irwin River, settled in 1853. The Royal Steam Roller Flour Mill built in the 1890s still stands impressively. Dongara became the centre of a small oil and gas industry that began with the discovery of the Dongara Gas Field in 1966.
