Cruises visiting Percy Island & all Percy Island cruises for  2018-2019

Percy Island (aka Middle Percy Island), one of The Percy Group of 8 islands on the Great Barrier Reef, is located 87 km off the Queensland coast, and 125 km SE of Mackay. The island was charted by Captain Cook and Matthew Flinders. The island is 6 km at its broadest, and frequently visited by yachts that anchor at West Bay, one of half a dozen sandy beaches. There are a number of structures: the Telephone Shed, Yacht Club A-Frame, and The Homestead. Volunteers willingly contribute to the island’s maintenance. At some beaches large, smooth sand dunes come right to the water’s edge.

The island itself is a fascinating time capsule of our pioneering past. Relics of the island’s colourful history nestle quietly on the 2000 ha of remote pristine paradise. The log 'A-frame' house is a true museum of memorabilia of past visiting ships and yachts, with numerous fascinating messages attached. Also of interest is the Tree House, and follow the walking track to Whites Bay, a 1.5 km curve of white sand, the water clear to 6 meters, and pristine sand on the bottom. A key feature of Percy Island is the natural wonder of the sea life in the fabulous underwater world surrounding its coastline.

Nine kilometres of walking tracks will get you everywhere. You’ll see grazing goats, introduced in 1874 to feed passing mariners, roaming free. However, since 2011 National Parks have taken over management of much of the island, and this could result in removal of introduced species. These include the goats, kangaroos, wallabies, and Rusa deer. Before leaving, go to West Bay and at the Percy Island A-frame Emporium purchase wild honey, conserves, prints of art work depicting island features, and a copy of the history of The Percy Isles, Past and Present. The island’s Friends of Percy Foundation have successfully nominated Percy Island for heritage listing.
