Durnstein, a delightful hamlet and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the region, lies nestled deep within Austria’s vineyard-rich Wachau Valley just 80 km west of Vienna. Crowned by the ruins of a mighty castle fortress, the cobblestone streets, the perfectly preserved baroque monastery, the 15th century Parish Church that has one of the finest Baroque towers in Austria, the old burgher and townhouses dating back from the 16th and 18th centuries, and visitors can really feel that they are strolling through history. Add to this several moments lingering by the banks of the Danube river where small shops offer a wide selection of goods at reasonable prices, and the fact that virtually every shop in town offers free samples of brandy, liqueur, or schnapps, and one is not surprised that Durnstein's alternative name is the 'Pearl of Wachau'.

Many make the effort to climb – the paved path is much easier to climb than the rough steep path facing the river – to the Kuenringer Castle for a truly fabulous view of the Wachau Valley and the Danube River. Claim to fame for this castle is that Richard the Lion Heart - a King of England - was held prisoner here for a year, while returning from a Crusade. Also a popular venue for tourists is a family staffed place on the main street in Dürnstein where, in summer, visitors can relax in a pleasant outdoor garden enjoying a glass of wine and some good food. Amazingly, inside - suspended above several restaurant tables - is an old winepress dating back to the 1700s.

There is also the option for visitors to board a motorised ‘toy train’ with several wagon cars. This is helpful for clients who have walking difficulties or desire to get a better overview of the area surrounding Dunstein. The train journeys through an adjacent village, into the vineyards and by wine processing facilities including those of Domane Wachau, one of Austria’s most famous winegrower societies. All will be delighted with this port that is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Wachau region.
