Nome is a seaport used by freighters and cruise ships, located on the southern side of the Seward Peninsula in Norton Sound, Alaska, just 250km across from Siberian Russia. It was a small Inupiat Eskimo settlement until the discovery of gold in 1898 brought over 20,000 fortune seekers, but most left after 10 years, and today there are approximately 4000 residents with half being Native Americans. Interestingly, Nome is the finish line of the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race covering over 1680km across the wilderness from Anchorage. Read more about Nome, USA

Hubbard Glacier enters Disenchantment Bay near the top end of the Alaska panhandle. Marching to the beat of a different drum, Hubbard Glacier is advancing while the rest of Alaska's ice rivers are receding rapidly. Metlakatla is the Tsimshian Indian village located on Annette Island close to the entrance to Misty Fjords in Alaska USA. It was founded as a model village by the Anglican missionary William Duncan in 1887 to house his Indian converts and today remains as a federal Indian Reservation. The fascinatingly furnished Duncan Museum, originally the house in which William Duncan once lived, and a replica of the original church that was destroyed by fire in 1948, are interesting historical reminders of the past. The Inside Passage is a coastal route for ocean-going vessels along a network of passages that weave through the islands on the Pacific coast of North America. The route extends from southeastern Alaska in the United States, through western British Columbia in Canada, to northwestern Washington State in the USA.
